‘회개에 합당한 열매를 맺으라.’  

1. 본문관찰과 묵상

세례 요한은 이사야의 예언대로 주의 길을 예비하기 위해 온 자였다 (사 40:3). 그가 광야에서 회개를 외쳤을 때, 유대 각처에서 사람들이 몰려와 죄를 자복하고 세례를 받았다. 그러나 요한은 회개 없이 구경하러 온 바리새인과 사두개인들을 향해 “독사의 자식들아!”라고 꾸짖으며 진정한 회개를 촉구했다.

2. QT를 통해 듣는 주님의 음성

당시 종교 지도자들은 자신들이 아브라함의 후손이라는 혈통적 자부심에 빠져 있었다. 하지만 요한은 하나님께서 능히 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자손이 되게 하실 수 있다고 선포했다.  하나님께는 혈통보다 회개의 열매가 중요하다.  좋은 열매를 맺지 않는 나무는 결국 찍혀 불에 던져질 것임을 엄중히 경고했다.

3. 결단과 적용

회개를 뜻하는 헬라어 ‘메타노이아(Metanoia)’는 단순히 감정적으로 후회하는 것이 아니라, 삶의 방향을 근본적으로 바꾸는 것이다. 즉, 죄의 길에서 돌이켜 주님께로 향하는 것이며, 마귀를 기쁘게 하던 삶에서 주님을 기쁘시게 하는 삶으로 전환하는 것이다.

세례 요한은 구약의 마지막 선지자로서 수많은 죄인을 새 언약의 주인공이신 예수께로 인도했다. 예수님께서는 그런 그를 향해 “여자가 낳은 자 중에 가장 큰 자”(마 11:11)라고 친히 증언하셨다. 나 또한 말로만 의로움을 주장하는 자가 아니라, 삶의 열매로 신앙을 증명하는 자가 되기를 소망한다.

오늘의 기도 

“좋은 나무가 나쁜 열매를 맺을 수 없고 못된 나무가 아름다운 열매를 맺을 수 없느니라… 이러므로 그들의 열매로 그들을 알리라” (마 7:18, 20).

주님, 제가 스스로 의로운 사람이라고 말할 필요가 없음을 깨닫습니다. 저의 삶이 맺는 열매가 곧 제가 어떤 사람인지를 보여줄 것이기 때문입니다. 주여, 오늘도 주님 가신 그 길을 따라 내 십자가를 지고 묵묵히 걷게 하소서. 그 십자가 위에서 나를 죽여, 많은 열매를 맺는 한 알의 밀알이 되게 하소서. 아멘.

‘Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.’

Mt. 3:1-10

1. Observation and Meditation

John the Baptist came to prepare the way for the Lord, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah (Is. 40:3). As he cried out in the wilderness for people to repent, crowds from Jerusalem, Judea, and the entire Jordan region came to him. They confessed their sins and were baptized. In contrast, John rebuked the Pharisees and Sadducees who came as mere observers, calling them a "brood of vipers" and challenging them to truly repent.

2. Hearing the Voice of the Lord

These proud religious leaders relied on their heritage as descendants of Abraham. However, John warned them that God could raise up children for Abraham even from stones. This suggests that God transforms the hearts of outcasts and sinners who truly confess. John’s message was clear: any tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

3. Decisions and Applications

In Greek, the word for repentance is “metanoia,” which means a total change of mind and direction—not merely feeling regret. It is the act of turning away from sin and turning toward Jesus; shifting from a life that serves the self and the enemy to a life that pleases God. Jesus testified that John was the greatest among those born of women because he served as the bridge between the Old and New Testaments, leading multitudes to Christ.

Today’s Prayer 

"A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit... Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them" (Mt. 7:18, 20). Lord, I do not need to proclaim my own righteousness; let the fruit I bear speak for me. Empower me to carry my cross daily, to crucify my old self with Jesus, and to live as a faithful seed in Your kingdom. Amen.
