‘가이오와 데메드리오가 받는 축복’
본문관찰과 묵상
사도요한은 진리 안에서 행하며 나그네와 이방인들을 지극정성으로 섬겼던 가이오와 데메드리오를 보며 기뻐했다. 이들은 공동체의 유익을 구하는 사도요한의 겸손한 조력자 들이었다. 반면 으뜸되기를 좋아하는 교만한 디오드레베는 사도들을 거부하고 악한 말로 비방하며 진리를 대적했다. 본문은 진리에 속한자와 교만에 속한 자의 극명한 대조를 보여준다.
QT를 통해 듣는 주님의 음성
가이오와 데메드리오가 누린 축복의 핵심은 ‘영혼의 잘됨’ 이 우선순위였다는 점이다. 세상은 환경이 안정되고 육체가 건강해야 평안이 찾아온다고 가르치지만, 성령의 원리는 그 반대다. 하나님과의 관계가 바로 서고 영혼이 강건해질때, 비로서 범사가 잘되고 육체도 강건해지는 ‘하나님나라의 질서’가 세워진다. 참된 축복은 세상적 성공이 아니라 하나님과의 깊은 친밀감에서 시작된다.
결단과 적용
과거 디오드레베 같은 교만한 자에게 배신을 당했던 아픈 기억이 떠오른다. 속이는 영에 사로잡혀 영적 분별력을 잃은 이들이 그 기만술에 넘어가는 모습을 보며 마음이 아팠다. 육적인 성공만을 앞세우는 교만은 사람의 눈을 가리고 공동체를 무너뜨린다. 하지만 그 고통속에서도 가이오와 데메드리오처럼 진리안에서 묵묵히 행하는 성도들 이 있기에 다시금 기쁨과 소망을 얻는다.
오늘의 기도
성령님 오늘도 저에게 영을 분별할 수 있는 지혜를 주소서. 겉치레와 교만에 속지 않게 하시고, 남은 생애동안 진리안에서 행하는 신실한 동역자들을 만나 아름다운 복음의 열매를 맺게 하소서!

Observation and meditation on the text
The apostle John expressed delight in Gaius and Demetrius because they worked in the truth, and faithfully served strangers, gentiles and fellow believers. In stark contrast, Diotrephes displayed pride by rejecting John’s authority and refusing to welcome others.
I hear the voice of the Lord through QT
I see the specific blessings Gaius and Demetrius received: their souls prospered in their relationship with God, which led to their affairs going well and their physical health being sustained. The world teaches a “bottom up” approach: that if we are healthy and successful, our souls will eventually be at peace. However, the Bible teaches a “top-down” priority: when our personal relationship with God is right (soul prosperity), it becomes the foundation for physical and circumstantial blessings.
Decisions and applications
I have experienced the pain of being betrayed by a proud person much like Diotrephes. It is sobering to see how many people, lacking discernment, are deceived by those with a spirit of deception. However, my heart is filled with joy because of the “remnants”- the Gaiuses and Demetriuses of today- who continue to live in the truth. While deceivers like Diotrephes may fool people for a time, I pray for the Holy Spirit to grant me the gift of discernment. Lord, help me discern the spirits clearly. Lead me to walk and work alongside those who live in the truth for the rest of my life.
