‘물 세례와 성령 및 불의 세례’
1. 본문 관찰과 묵상
물 세례는 율법 앞에서 회개를 촉구하는 세례다. 과거 이스라엘 백성이 홍해를 건널 때 물 세례를 받고 모세 (율법)와 연합되었듯이 율법의 기능은 인간으로 하여금 죄를 깨닫고 회개하게 하는 데 있다. 율법 그 자체는 거룩하고 의로운 것이다(롬 7:12).
2. 묵상을 통해 듣는 주님의 음성
율법은 죄를 깨닫게 하여 겉 사람을 물로 씻기듯 정결케 하지만, 우리를 죄의 권세로부터 속 사람을 자유하게 하지 못한다. 그렇기에 예수님의 세례는 '성령과 불의 세례' 여야 한다.
• 불: 죄를 소멸하시는 하나님의 강력한 능력이다 (신 4:24).
• 성령: 죄로 죽었던 우리의 속 사람을 새롭게 살린다 (엡 3:16). 성령과 불의 세례를 통해 우리는 예수와 연합한다. 이로써 우리는 죄에 대하여 죽고, 의에 대하여 다시 살아나게 되는 것이다.
3. 결단과 적용
예수님은 죄가 없으심에도 불구하고 우리 죄인들과 자신을 동일시하셨기에 요한에게 물 세례를 받으셨다. 그때 성령이 비둘기같이 임하고, 성부 하나님께서는 예수를 향해 "내 사랑하는 아들이요 기뻐하는 자"라고 선포하셨다. 세례의 현장에 삼위일체 하나님이 함께하신 것이다.
나 또한 나 자신을 이웃 (죄인) 과 동일시하며, 그들을 주님께로 인도하는 삶을 살리라. 그들이 성령과 불로 세례 받아 '알곡'이 되도록 돕는 것이 주님께 인정받는 종의 자세일 것이다. 성령과 불의 세례는 오늘도 교회 안에서부터 알곡과 쭉정이를 구별하는 심판의 기준이 됨을 기억한다 (벧전 4:17).

주님, 죄 없으신 당신께서 자신을 죄인과 동일시하며 물 세례를 받으셨음을 기억합니다. 저 또한 날마다 제 죄를 회개하며 겸손히 살게 하소서. 나의 삶이 타인을 위한 대속적인 삶이 될 때, 비둘기 같은 성령이 임하고 하나님으로부터 "사랑하는 자"라 칭함 받는 은혜를 누리게 하소서. 성령과 불로 제 속 사람을 강건하게 하사, 오늘도 담대히 복음을 전파하며 살게 하옵소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도드립니다. 아멘.
‘Water baptism vs Holy Spirit and fire baptism’
Matthew 3:11-17
1. Observation and Meditation
John the Baptist urged the people to repent of their sins in accordance with the Law. Just as the Israelites were "baptized" into unity with Moses when they crossed the Red Sea, water baptism signifies a turning toward God. The Law is righteous because it acts as a mirror, helping people recognize their sins so that they may repent (Romans 7:12).
2. Hearing the Voice of the Lord
The Law washes sins outwardly, much like water cleanses the skin, but it cannot reach the inner man. In contrast, Jesus baptizes me with the Holy Spirit and fire. God’s fire consumes my sinful heart (Deu. 4:24/Heb. 12:29), while the Holy Spirit revives my inner being, which was once dead in sin (Eph. 3:16). This baptism of Spirit and Fire empowers me to be united with Jesus; it allows me to die to my sins and be resurrected in His righteousness.
3. Decisions and Applications
I am moved by how Jesus identified Himself with sinners by being baptized by John. In that moment, the Triune God was revealed: the Spirit descended like a dove, and the Father’s voice declared Jesus as His beloved Son.
If I identify with sinners and lead them to Jesus—so they too may be baptized by the Holy Spirit and Fire—I trust that I will also be known as a child of God. God is already working within His church to separate the wheat from the chaff through the refining fire of the Spirit (1 Peter 4:17). I must ensure I am "wheat" that is gathered into His barn.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, since You identified Yourself with sinners through water baptism, help me to live a life of sincere repentance. May Your Holy Spirit descend upon me and dwell within me. As I offer my life as a living sacrifice, I desire to hear Your voice calling me Your beloved child. Strengthen my inner being by Your Spirit so that I may boldly witness for Jesus to the world. In Jesus' name, Amen.
