‘Pick me up and throw me into the sea’
Jonah 1:11-16
1. Observation and meditation on the text
Seeing that the storm was growing increasingly violent, the terrified sailors asked Jonah what they should do to calm the sea. He replied, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea." Jonah was able to say this because he had finally repented of his disobedience and was ready to accept the consequences to save others.
2. I hear the voice of the Lord through QT
Through this text, I hear the heart of Jesus. Just as Jonah was cast into the sea, Jesus allowed Himself to be crucified for the sake of all sinners, willingly bearing our guilt as if He were the sinner Himself. The Lord is calling me to follow Him in this—to live a sacrificial, redemptive life.
3. Decisions and applications
The disobedience of one man, Adam, brought death upon all humanity. But the perfect obedience of the "Second Adam," Jesus Christ, opened a new, living way for all sinners to be saved. Just as everyone on that ship was saved by Jonah being thrown into the sea, the world is saved through Christ. I choose today to walk in obedience rather than self-preservation.
Today's Prayer
Lord, empower me so that I may live a redemptive, sacrificial life like Jonah and Jesus, instead of chasing a selfish, fleshly, and success-oriented life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
