‘메시야를 죽이려는 자와 경배하는 자’  

본문관찰과 묵상

동방에서 온 박사들은 별의 인도를 따라 아기 예수를 찾아와 황금과 유향, 몰약을 예물로 드리며 경배했다. 반면, 유대 땅에 또 다른 왕이 태어났다는 소식을 들은 헤롯 왕은 자신의 권좌를 위협받을까 분노하며 예수를 죽일 기회를 찾았다. 이처럼 본문은 만왕의 왕을 대하는 두 가지 상반된 태도를 극명하게 대조한다.

주님의 음성: "나는 무엇을 위해 예배하는가?"

나는 단순히 좋은 설교를 듣고 위로받기 위해, 혹은 더 나은 환경의 교회를 찾아다니는 '종교 소비자'는 아닌가? 주님은 오늘 내게 물으신다. "너는 나를 위해 죽고 생명을 준 나, 예수 그리스도를 경배하기 위해 오느냐?"

사역이나 봉사보다 앞서야 할 본질은 예배다. 내가 교회에 가는 단 하나의 이유는 오직 나의 구원자이신 예수 그리스도를 높이고 경배하기 위함이어야 한다.

결단과 적용: 구유에 오신 생명의 양식

인간의 죄성은 늘 내가 왕이 되어 살고자 한다. 교만과 자기중심성으로 바벨탑을 쌓으며, 헤롯처럼 스스로 패망의 길을 자초하곤 한다. 그러나 만군의 왕이신 예수님은 가장 낮은 자리인 말구유에 오셨다. 짐승 같은 삶을 사는 죄인들을 살리는 '영적 양식'이 되기 위함이었다.  "내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시는 자는 영생을 가졌고 마지막 날에 내가 그를 다시 살리리니 내 살은 참된 양식이요 내 피는 참된 음료로다 내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시는 자는 내 안에 거하고 나도 그의 안에 거하나니" (요 6:54-56)  나에게 생명을 주시려 가장 낮은 곳까지 내려오신 주님을 찬양합니다. 주님의 보혈로 죄 사함을 받았음을 고백하며, 이제는 생명의 말씀인 주님의 살과 피를 먹음으로 온전히 순종하는 삶을 살리라.

오늘의 기도

주님, 어떠한 사역을 감당하기에 앞서 온전한 예배자로 살게 하소서. 오늘도 낮은 자리에서 나를 증명하는 것이 아니라 오직 예수님만 높이며 그 사랑을 전하게 하소서. 나의 황금과 유향과 몰약을 왕이신 하나님께 기쁨으로 드립니다.

“왕이신 나의 하나님이여 내가 주를 높이고 영원히 주의 이름을 송축하리이다” (시 145:1)

Observation and Meditation

The Magi, wise men from the East, followed a star to find the child Jesus. Upon finding Him, they fell down and worshipped Him, offering gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In stark contrast, King Herod—driven by jealousy and the fear of losing his power—sought to find Jesus only to kill Him. One group traveled far to give; the other stayed close to destroy.

Hearing the Voice of the Lord

I must ask myself: Why do I go to church? Is it merely to be "blessed" by a sermon, a mega-church atmosphere, or a famous preacher? Or do I go to truly worship Christ Jesus, who died and rose again to conquer my sin? I am reminded that before I am called to any ministry, I am called first to be a worshipper of my Savior.

Decisions and Applications

The sin inherent in all humanity pushes us to be the kings of our own lives. Like Herod, we are naturally inclined to build our own "Babel towers" out of pride. Yet Jesus, the true King, came to the lowest place in humility. He identified with sinners like me—people driven by "beast-like" instincts—and placed Himself in a manger to be our spiritual bread.

As Jesus said in John 6:54-56, His flesh is real food and His blood is real drink. By His blood, my sins are washed away; by "eating" His Word, I am made alive. Today, I choose to live not for my own glory, but to lift up the name of Jesus.

Today’s Prayer 

Lord, empower me to be a true worshipper before I attempt any ministry. Strengthen me to exalt Your name in the lowly places of this earth as Your witness. I offer my "gold, frankincense, and myrrh"—my very best—to You, my King. "I exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever" (Psalm 145:1). Amen.
