‘생명을 잃어도 사명을 잃지 않은 세례 요한’  

1. 본문 관찰과 묵상

헤롯 대왕의 아들 분봉왕 헤롯 안티파스는 불의한 자였다.  동생 빌립의 아내 헤로디아를 자신의 아내로 삼아 ‘더러운 짓’ (레 20:21)을 범했다. 

2. QT를 통해 듣는 주님의 음성

세례 요한이 죄를 책망하자  옥에 가두었다.  자신의 생일에 헤로디아의 딸의 요청에 세례요한을 죽였다.   세례 요한은 죽음으로 예수의 길을 예비했다.      

3. 결단과 적용

나도 주의 길을 예비하는 사명을 받았다.  결국 내가 죽어야 예수께서 일하신다.  “나는 날마다 죽노라” (고전 15:31).  “나의 달려갈 길과 우리 주 예수 그리스도께로부터 받은 사명 곧 하나님의 은혜의 복음전함을 마치려 함에는 나의 생명을 조금도 귀한 것으로 여기지 아니하노라” (행 20:24).  오늘 잘 죽기 위해 산다.  그래서 예수의 길을 예비하며 살리라.  

오늘의 기도

주여, 부활의 믿음으로 매일 잘 죽어 살게 하소서.  내 생각과 뜻에는 죽고 하나님의 주신 사명으로 매일 부활하여 살게 하소서.  내 자신을 부인하고 내 십자가 지고 오늘도 잘 죽을 때 예수 께서 잃어버린 영혼들에게 생명을 주시는 주님의 사역이 계속 될 줄 믿습니다.   나를 사용하소서!  예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다.

‘John the Baptist lost his life, but completed his mission’

Mt. 14:1-12

1. Observation and Meditation

Herod Antipas the tetrarch, the son of Herod the Great, was an unrighteous ruler. He took his brother Philip’s wife, committing an act of impurity (Lev. 20:21).

2. Hearing the Voice of the Lord

When he was rebuked by John the Baptist, Herod Antipas threw John into prison. During his birthday party, Herodias’ daughter danced for him; at her request, John the Baptist was executed. Through his death, John the Baptist finished preparing the way for Jesus Christ.

3. Decisions and Applications

Ultimately, when I die to my own will, Jesus begins to work through me. Paul declared, "I die every day" (1 Cor. 15:31). I also “consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace” (Acts 20:24). Therefore, today I choose to "die" to my own desires so that I may prepare the way for Jesus.

Today's Prayer

Lord, empower me so that I may "die well" every day. Let me die to my own thoughts and will so that I may be resurrected daily to the will of God. I believe that Jesus’ ministry to revive and restore broken souls will continue whenever I deny myself and take up my cross. Here I am, Lord; use me for Your will and glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
