‘Those who should live in the hell as they are alive.’
Ps. 55:1-15
Observation and meditation on the text
David confessed that it was the wicked tongues of his enemies which caused him to experience the deadly sufferings in the middle of such extreme violence and strife in the city. David also confessed that if his sufferings were caused by his enemies’ oppressions and threats, he could have endured and hided.
I hear the voice of the Lord through QT
However, he asked himself that who could be his enemies? Surprisingly, they were his intimate friends who happily lived with him as they praised and worshiped the Lord together all the times. Therefore, he could not ask God to kill them, but simply to cut off their wicked tongues. David prayed to God to destroy their tongues which had destroyed their faith community so that they might live in the hell as they were alive.
Decisions and applications
David was the typology of Jesus Christ who had come as a suffering Messiah. David did not want to destroy his enemies but let them repent of their sins as they experienced they were reaping what they had sown so that they might repent of their sins and return to God for themselves as Jesus Christ has given us another chance to restore our broken lives. Then, I also can forgive my enemies by such a love of Jesus. Therefore, I also pray to God for my enemies, ‘Lord cut off their wicked tongues instead of destroying them.’
