‘Pride is the short cut for failure’
Jos 7:1-15
Observation and meditation on the text
After conquering Jericho, the Israelites were defeated by small city of Ai. Why? First, out of pride Achan took the booties for himself instead of giving it to the Lord as ‘herem,’ means to destroy the devoted things to the Lord. Second, out of pride they dispatched a small army of 3,000 as they looked down on people in Ai. They were defeated by the people in Ai.
I hear the voice of the Lord through QT
‘Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall’ (Pr. 16:18). I examine myself whether there is anything that I take any ‘herem,’ which should be given to God out of my pride. I also examine my heart whether I take any small thing for granted out of haughty spirit.
Decisions and applications
Had I happened to take a very serious spiritual pandemonium lightly in church out of pride? Shouldn’t I have opened the pandora box before congregation so that they should know the truth not to be deceived by evil spirit? Why should I have remained in silence without taking any proactive remedies? Was it out of my pride? Or due to my insufficient spiritual discernment and reaction against the evil spirit due to my physical weaknesses? In retrospect I have realized that God has wanted me to remain in silence whatsoever may happen to me. Meanwhile, there must be God’s plan and will to be done. I gradually but surely begin to see such God’s will is being fulfilled in silence. Halleluiah!
